Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, Espinho
Facts and practical information
The Parish and Mother Church of Espinho is located in Espinho; it was designed by the architect Adães Bermudes and reveals a modernized revivalist taste, with a Latin cross-shaped plan of a single nave and transcepter. The volumetry of the main facade is marked by an imposing bell tower, preceded by a small staircase leading to the main doorway. "This is constituted by an arch of perfect round, surrounded by a lacy composition, topped by a triangular pediment and finished by a Latin cross.
Its construction began in 1930 under Father Joaquim Teixeira Silva Amaral, in order to replace the destroyed chapel of Praça Nova, which was located in an area invaded by the sea. It has a decorative bell tower and the entrance portico has a carved pantocrator. In its interior we can find several side chapels in altar shape, one of which contains an interesting image of Jesus Christ of large dimensions, in polychrome wood, carved by Teixeira Lopes.
In 2022 it will be subject to works that will include changing the flooring, painting the walls, and replacing the sound and lighting systems. The deadline for execution is expected to be two years and will cost around one million and 400 thousand Euros.
