Facts and practical information

The Santiago Church is a church located in the parish of Santiago, in the city of Tavira, near the castle of this city.

Dating from the late 13th century, it is dedicated to Santiago Maior. It was donated by King Afonso III to the Bishop of Silves in 1270, and belonged to the Military Order of Santiago de Espada. It was heavily damaged during the earthquake of 1755, and its current image is the result of reconstruction after that earthquake. It is a religious building with one nave, and several chapels and altars. The church is considered the starting point of the eastern route of the Portuguese Way of St. James.
