Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, Ponta do Sol
Facts and practical information
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz is the mother church of Ponta do Sol, Autonomous Region of Madeira, it was built in the late 15th century.
Inside the church there is a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio, built by Rodrigues Eanes, o Coxo, in his will of 1486, where you can also find the tombstone of Rodrigues Anes, o Coxo, which has an inscription in gothic letters.
The facade we see today dates from 1708, the year in which the frontispiece of the temple, with its Manueline portal, was demolished to make way for the body of the Matriz.
The church has precious silver religious vestments and several images, of which the Hispano-Arabic style ceiling of the main chapel stands out, as well as the baptismal font, offered by king D. Manuel I, in green mudéjar ceramics, a unique example in the country.
