Termas
Facts and practical information
Termas do Carapacho thermal springs are located in Carapacho, in Luz parish, in Graciosa Island, Azores. Set in a bathing area, with a natural pool, the spa is very popular with people who seek the multiple benefits of its hot waters.
This spa is located by the sea, at the foot of the island's highest volcanic rise that culminates in the Caldeira da Graciosa, where another of the island's most popular tourist attractions is located: Furna do Enxofre.
Originating in the aquifer underlying the Furna do Enxofre, its waters are chlorinated, sodic, sulfate, calcium, hypersaline, bicarbonated sodic chloride very rich in magnesium salts and with a PH of 7.2. They emerge at a temperature of about 40°C.
Its therapeutic use dates back to at least the 1750s in the prophylaxis of rheumatic, skin, liver and colitis diseases, the most usual form of treatment being the immersion baths.
The 19th century building, classic in style, was completely renovated in 2010, adding spa services to the medicinal therapies. It is currently equipped with 16 cabins for individual immersion baths and a medical office specialized in the area. The specialized medical presence is due to the collaboration of the Portuguese Institute of Rheumatology and the Regional Directorate of Tourism.
The spa season runs from May 1 to September 30 each year.
Next to the hot springs, which operate in a building constructed by the General Council of the former Autonomous District of Angra do Heroísmo between 1947 and 1951, on the sea side there is a natural swimming pool, much sought after during the bathing season.
