Torre Do Álamo
Facts and practical information
Torre do Álamo, so named by popular tradition, is a Portuguese monument located in Herdade do Álamo, parish of Cano, district of Portalegre, in Portugal.
It is located in a private property and in an advanced state of degradation. Its architecture dates back to the late 15th century, with Renaissance influences already visible on the interior walls.
Due to its height, location and appearance, it seems to have been a building with military functions, of the atalaia type, which would allow a better communication between Avis and Estremoz, important military centers.
The estate where it is located belonged, for several generations, to a family with the surname Peres, thought to have been of Camões' own family, hence the popular tradition that names the tower as Camões' Tower.
There is also a legend that says that it was in this tower that Luís Vaz Peres de Camões, accomplice of John I of Castile was imprisoned for some time.
It has several overlapping architectures and its historical era is not known for sure.
