Igreja Matriz de São Pedro
Facts and practical information
The Matriz de São Pedro Church, Parochial Church of Terena or São Pedro Church, is located in one of the highest points of the town of Terena, from whose churchyard one enjoys a wide panorama.
The church is very old, existing already in 1394. According to tradition it was the second parish church in the village and succeeded the first, which was the church known today as Santuário da Boa Nova.
From the origins, the Gothic statues of the Patron Saint and of Santa Catarina Mártir, in marble, exposed in the acroteria of the main facade, are preserved. The Mother Church was later altered in the 16th century, of which the apse, of ribbed vaulting, covered with tiles of the "maçaroca" type, is a vestige. In the 18th century the gilded carved altarpiece of the main altar and the pulpit, in marble, were built. In this period the church had four brotherhoods: Santíssimo Sacramento, Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Miguel and Ordem Terceira de São Francisco.
The Prior was presented by the Crown and had two Beneficiary clerics. Already in the nineteenth century other works were made in the church, which gave the nave the current appearance, the paintings of the vault and the arch of the Chancel were made, the choir was added and the Baptistery, which retains the old Pia, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the Altar of Our Lady of the Rosary were remodeled, among other minor modifications.
In the Sacristy there is a 16th century triptych painting depicting St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Andrew, believed to have been the original altarpiece of the main altar.
