Jardim do Morro, Vila Nova de Gaia
Facts and practical information
Jardim do Morro is a green space in the parish of Santa Marinha, in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.
Located at the foot of the Serra do Pilar, near the upper deck of the D. Luís Bridge, it is a magnificent viewpoint of the historic area of Porto. It has a lake, a bandstand and a wide variety of plant species, among which are 22 lindias lined up along the final stretch of Avenida da República.
Jardim do Morro was built in 1927 in Gaia. Since then, the design has changed little despite the fact that in 2016 it was a neighbor to the subway and a place of passage for thousands of tourists. But the historic garden has been losing its liveliness, and signs of degradation are growing. What remains are the stumps of cut trees, old paper bins, graffitied benches and a waterless lake surrounding the grotto.
The Jardim do Morro, in Gaia, will be requalified during the summer of 2016. The works will cost half a million euros and will be supported by the City Council. The green space, which attracts many tourists, will have an outdoor amphitheater, a geriatric park and a cafeteria. The grotto and the lake will be preserved.
