Cascata da Frecha da Mizarela
Facts and practical information
Frecha da Mizarela Waterfall, or simply Frecha da Mizarela, is a waterfall located in Serra da Freita, near the village of Albergaria da Serra, municipality of Arouca, District of Aveiro.
This waterfall is located in the granite rock of the Serra da Freita plateau, at an altitude of about 910 meters. It is fed by the waters of the Caima river and has a height of about 75 meters, thus being one of the highest waterfalls in Portugal and one of the highest in Europe.
As granite is more resistant to fluvial erosion of the Caima River than most shales and graywacke, a remarkable unevenness was formed over time and the waterfall originated. However, in addition to differential erosion, the orientation of the fault systems that affect the entire block of Serra da Freita is also thought to have had a direct influence on the formation of this unique scarp.
