Castelo de Sortelha

Perched atop a granite crag in the historic village of Sortelha, the Castelo de Sortelha is one of the most well-preserved medieval fortresses in Portugal. Dating back to the 13th century, this imposing castle stands as a testament to the country's rich feudal history and architectural heritage.

The Castelo de Sortelha was strategically built during the reign of King Sancho II of Portugal, as part of a defensive network of fortifications along the border with Spain. Its walls and towers were designed to withstand long sieges and provide refuge for the local population in times of conflict. Its location, on a high point with steep slopes on all sides, offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Visitors can walk along the castle's battlements and explore the ruins, which include the keep, the gatehouse, and a cistern that once supplied water to the fortress.
