Sete Cidades
Facts and practical information
Sete Cidades, a majestic twin lake situated in the crater of a dormant volcano, is a crown jewel of São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal. This natural wonder, part of the town of Ponta Delgada, is enveloped in myths and shrouded by the verdant highlands of the region. It consists of two ecologically distinct bodies of water—Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) and Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake)—separated by a narrow strait that is crossed by a bridge.
The lakes, which are about 4.2 square kilometers in size, are a stunning example of volcanic landscapes, having been formed approximately 22,000 years ago. The different colors of the lakes, one a deep blue and the other a bright green, are a result of the distinct reflections of the sunlight on the differing types of algae and depths of the lake beds.
Sete Cidades is not just a feast for the eyes but also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, cycling, and canoeing are popular activities, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the area. The most famous viewpoint, Vista do Rei, offers a panoramic view that encapsulates the grandeur of the lakes and the surrounding crater walls.
The village of Sete Cidades, located within the crater, adds a quaint charm to the area with its peaceful atmosphere, traditional houses, and the iconic white and blue church, São Nicolau. The legend of Sete Cidades, which tells a tale of a shepherd and a princess who cried tears that formed the two lakes, adds a layer of romance to the awe-inspiring scenery.
