Krenicyn, Onekotan
Facts and practical information
Krenicin - active stratovulkan with a height of about 1325 m a.s.l. in the Asian part of Russia. One of the two volcanoes on the island of Onekotan, lying in the archipelago of the Kuril Islands. The last eruption was recorded in 1952. The volcano, like the neighboring Nemo volcano, as a result of a huge eruption, created a caldera around him. The caldera called the Tao-Rusyr has about 7.5 kilometer diameter, which is largely filled with water. According to estimates, it was created about 5500 BC, during the largest Holocene volcano eruption in the Kuril Islands. The name of the volcanic cone was taken from the name of the Russian traveler and naval officer Piotr Krenica.
