The Museum of Mordovian Folk Culture is a branch of the S. D. Erzya Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts. It is located in the city of Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia.
The museum was opened on October 6, 1999.
It is located in a building which is a monument of urban architecture of the early 20th century, built before the October Revolution. During the Civil War it housed a mobilization department of the 1st Army, then the building housed the House of Unions, a hospital, the Supreme Court of Mordovian ASSR, the board of Mordovian branch of Znanie society, the board of Mordovian Writers Union and a scientific-restoration workshop.
The museum funds include more than 3.5 thousand exhibits: Mordovian national clothing, household items, agricultural implements, icons, wooden sculptures, books and photographs. There are several thematic halls, where visitors can see exhibits on seasonal rites of the Mordovian people, Mordovian holidays, wedding customs, everyday life of Mordovian women, life and upbringing of children in a Mordovian village. Exhibitions of works by Mordovian artists and folk crafts are regularly held in the exhibition hall of the museum.
