Church of the Savior on Blood, Saint Petersburg

The Church of the Savior on Blood stands as an architectural masterpiece in the heart of Saint Petersburg, Russia. This magnificent church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in 1881. Consecrated in 1907, the church was dedicated to his memory and stands as a testament to the intricate Russian style of architecture.

With its multi-colored onion domes and richly decorated façades, the Church of the Savior on Blood is a feast for the eyes. The structure is adorned with intricate mosaics, which cover over 7,000 square meters, making it one of the largest collections of mosaics in Europe. These mosaics depict biblical scenes and figures with stunning artistry and are considered masterpieces of Russian art.

The church was designed by architect Alfred Alexandrovich Parland in the style of medieval Russian architecture, drawing inspiration from the St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Its official name is the Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it is commonly known as the Church of the Savior on Blood, referring to the blood of the assassinated tsar.

During the Soviet era, the church suffered neglect and was repurposed as a morgue during the Siege of Leningrad, and later as a vegetable warehouse. It was not until the late 20th century that restoration began, and the church was reopened to the public as a museum.
