The GAZ history museum was opened on October 10, 1965. Its initiators were GAZ veterans and administration. The original name was "GAZ Museum of History and Labor Glory".

The museum is located on two floors of the GAZ Training Center, it has over 40,000 exhibits. On the second floor is the "History and Development of GAZ" exposition, and downstairs is the stationary exhibition "Cars and Their Creators". The museum has a unique collection of cars and documentary fund, including archives of the plant's employees. The museum introduces visitors to the traditions of GAZ and automobile culture through its unique collection. In addition to cars, the museum collects and preserves everything related to the life of automakers.

The museum exposition, reference system, work with visitors contribute to the formation of public opinion about the company. The automobile heritage of GAZ is of particular interest to visitors. All the cars were acquired as a result of systematic search work, they are restored and maintained in working condition.

In 1996, the museum was included in the Catalogue of Automobile Museums of Europe.

In 1999, the museum participated in the 6th World Forum of Automobile Museums in Stuttgart, Germany.
