Facts and practical information
Gostiny Dvor Gate Tower is a three-storey civic building with two passage arches, above the middle part of which an octagonal tower topped with a hipped roof rises. It is situated to the north-west of the Nicolo-Dvorishchensky Cathedral on the territory of the Torg and Yaroslav's Court in Veliky Novgorod.
At one time the tower, without any reason, was called Vechevoi. It was also considered to be a "gadny in the Prince's courtyard", built in 1472. Only recently it was found out that in fact it was a gate tower of the Gostiny Dvor which had been built in 1686 in the course of enormous construction work in the Novgorod Kremlin, in the market place and in Yaroslav's Court. It was built by Guriy Vakhromeev, an "apprentice of stone affairs", according to the design and estimate drawings of Semen Yefimov, a "stone affairs apprentice". By its architectural forms the Gostiny Dvor gate tower repeated the main gates of the Voivodeship court.
The premises of the Gate Tower have been occupied since 1857 by the Novgorod Parochial School. Nowadays there is a museum exposition "Christian antiquities. Art Metal of the XI-XIX cc.
