Facts and practical information
The Voroshilov Battery is a coastal turret battery No. 981 named after Klim Voroshilov with a caliber of 305 mm. The battery is located on Russky Island in Vladivostok.
Under each of the two towers are underground living quarters, technical rooms and ammunition stores, a total of three floors. The towers are connected to each other through a 250-meter-long deep-groove.
"The Voroshilov Battery is one of the unique fortifications in the world. The decision to build it was made in the spring of 1931. The next two years were spent only on rock and underground works. The towers and shafts were delivered to the island by the sea, and then - by a specially built railroad. The first tower was ready on February 1, 1934 and the second one on April 1, 1934.
In spring 1931 the USSR Revolutionary Military Council made a decision - to strengthen the defense of the city of Vladivostok. The commission, headed by Commissar of Defense Klim Voroshilov, chose an island for a new "bridgehead", a height near the eastern corner of Novik Bay. It was decided to install a turret 305-mm artillery battery, arming it with two three-barreled armored turrets from the battleship "Mikhail Frunze", which after conversion were designated as MB-3-12FM. During 1932-1933 it was possible to perform most of the concrete, rock and underground works. Parts of towers and gun barrels were transported to the island by barges. To transport the towers, railroad was built from Cape Polonsky on the shore of Novik Bay. Machines and metal structures were delivered to the battery's construction site on ice, using tractor wagons. The assembly of the first tower was finished in February 1, 1934; the second was finished two months later. In November 11 of the same year the newly formed battery was named after K. Voroshilov. The first commander of the battery was appointed Major Nikolai Arseniev. In 1941 new barrels were installed, and the old ones were removed. The composition of gunpowder and the technology of its production, created by the Research Institute No. 6 of the USSR People's Commissariat of Ammunition, are still secret.
During the reform of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 1997, the battery as a combat unit was disbanded, and on its basis since 1998, created a branch of the Military Historical Museum of the TOF 'Voroshilov Battery'. A similarly armed battery is located in Sevastopol: the 30th Armored Battery, also armed with two turrets from the battleship Frunze.
