Rostral Columns, Saint Petersburg

The Rostral Columns stand as majestic architectural beacons on the Strelka of Vasilievsky Island, framing the grandeur of Saint Petersburg's Neva River. These ornate columns, built in the early 19th century, are not merely decorative; they once served as lighthouses guiding ships through the busy port of Russia's imperial capital.

Each column, measuring 32 meters in height, is adorned with sculptures and carvings that celebrate the maritime glory of the Russian Empire. The prows of ships (rostra in Latin) jut out from the structures, giving these columns their distinctive name and naval character. The base of each column is encircled by figures representing the major rivers of Russia – the Volga, Dnieper, Neva, and Volkhov.

Designed by French architect Thomas de Thomon and completed in 1811, the Rostral Columns are exemplary of the Empire style, echoing the grandeur of ancient Rome. Their purpose as functioning lighthouses was short-lived, but their flames continue to be lit on ceremonial occasions, preserving the historical tradition.
