Lake Retba, Dakar

Lake Retba, commonly referred to as Lac Rose by locals, is one of Senegal's most unique natural wonders, located just northeast of the capital city of Dakar. This peculiar body of water is renowned for its striking pink hue, a result of the Dunaliella salina algae that thrive in its high-salinity environment. The lake's vivid color is most pronounced during Senegal's dry season, from November to June, and is particularly intense when the sun is at its zenith.

The saline content of Lake Retba is comparable to that of the Dead Sea, allowing people to float effortlessly on its surface. This high concentration of salt is also the reason behind the lake's economic significance. Salt collectors, often seen covered in shea butter to protect their skin, manually harvest the mineral by diving into the lake's depths. The salt is then piled along the shoreline to dry and is eventually used locally or exported.
