Vlasina Lake
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the serene highlands of southeastern Serbia, Vlasina Lake stands as a tranquil oasis and a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. This artificial lake, created in 1947 through the damming of the Vlasina River, is situated at an altitude of 1,213 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest in Serbia.
Spanning an area of about 16 square kilometers, Vlasina Lake is renowned for its unique floating islands, which are a rare natural phenomenon. These peat islands drift across the lake, changing their position with the wind and currents, creating an ever-evolving landscape that captivates visitors. The lake's crystal-clear waters are home to a rich diversity of fish, including the indigenous Vlasina trout, making it a popular destination for fishing.
Surrounded by lush meadows and dense forests, the lake's environment supports a variety of flora and fauna, with numerous endemic species found in the area. It is a haven for bird watchers, with many rare and protected bird species nesting around the lake.
Vlasina Lake is not just a summer retreat; it offers a range of outdoor activities throughout the year. In the warmer months, tourists can enjoy boating, swimming, and hiking along the many trails that offer breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland ideal for cross-country skiing and other winter sports.
