Đavolja Varoš
Facts and practical information
Đavolja Varoš, which translates to "Devil's Town," is an enigmatic natural monument located in the southern part of Serbia. This unique geological phenomenon consists of over 200 peculiar rock formations, known as earth pyramids or towers, which rise from the surrounding soil like eerie sentinels of ancient times. These spires, some of which reach up to 15 meters in height, are crowned with stone caps, which protect them from erosion, giving them their distinctive and somewhat otherworldly appearance.
The site is steeped in legend, with local folklore attributing the creation of the formations to various supernatural causes, hence the ominous name. Scientifically, however, the formations are the result of intense volcanic activity followed by centuries of erosion. The soil pillars have been sculpted over time by the forces of wind and water, leaving behind the more resilient rock caps as protectors against the elements.
Đavolja Varoš is not only a geological wonder but also an ecological one. The area boasts a variety of plant species, some of which are endemic, adding to the mystical ambiance of the place. Visitors to this natural masterpiece can explore two natural springs, one with acidic water believed by locals to possess healing properties.
Recognized for its outstanding natural value, Đavolja Varoš was a candidate for one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. This remarkable site attracts tourists, geologists, and nature enthusiasts alike who come to marvel at its peculiar towers and delve into the rich tapestry of myth and science that surrounds them.
