Founding of modern SingaporeSir Stamford Raffles establishes Singapore as a trading post for the British East India Company, which was formed to set up trade with East Asia and India.

The Straits SettlementsBritain establishes a colony made up of three trade centers, including Singapore. The centers are known collectively as the Straits Settlements.
1942
Light of the SouthSingapore falls to Japan in World War II. Japan renames Singapore Light of the South.
1945
British military authorityJapan is defeated and World War II ends. Singapore comes under British military authority.

British colonySingapore becomes a separate British colony.
1954
People's Action PartyLee Kuan Yew helps found the People's Action Party. Today, it is Singapore's leading political party.
