Čumil, Bratislava
Facts and practical information
Čumil - a monument in the Old Town in Bratislava.
The sculpture depicts a chainic leaning out of the open sewage manhole and observing passers -by from the street level. The author of the brown figure is Viktor Hulík, and Čumil was created as part of the Bratislava center revitalization project. The figure of the voyeur was mounted on July 26, 1997 and immediately became one of the most photographed monuments of the capital of Slovakia. As the author claims, Čumil does not symbolize anything, it is not ever living, he does not refer to any events, but only was to be a way to revive the old town. Regardless of the knowledge and will of the author of the monument, numerous stories related to it are created - both describing the biography of the alleged prototype of the character, and promising happiness in exchange for stroke Čumila on the head.
The Čumila sculpture is located at the intersection of Laurinska, Panska and Fisherman's Gate streets in the Old Town Hiking Zone. Since 1999, the sculpture has been recommended with a specially prepared road reminder sign. The sign contains the image of Čumil and the inscription "Man at Work". The reason for this detail were two communication accidents in which the sculpture was damaged. The sign is to draw the attention of both tourists and drivers of vehicles approved to move around the pedestrian zone.
In 2008, monuments with a very similar form to Bratislava Čumil were created in Belarus, which due to the similarity of details can be considered arbitrary copies of the Slovak monument.
The Cannalar's monument is also in Serbia in the city of Subotica, although it is no longer smiling.
