Hrad Šášov
Facts and practical information
Castle Šášov - ruins of the castle in Żar nad Hron in the Banskobystrzycki country in Slovakia.
The castle was erected on the northern edge of the Szczawnickie Mountains, on a steep rock rising above the Hron. He dominated the intersection of important trade routes, one of which led from Kremnica to Turca, and the other through the Hron Valley from the Danube Plain to Zwoleń. For the first time he was mentioned in 1253. He was then in the hands of the Vanch brothers, of which Stefan was the Archbishop of Ostrzyhom. The facility consisted of the so -called an internal castle, erected on a plan of a heavily elongated oval and lower, a subgrid. Two round towers defended the entrances to him.
From the beginning of the fourteenth century until the second half of the 17th century, it often changed owners. Together with the neighboring castle Revište, located more south, on the other bank of the Hron, he defended access to the mining district of Banska Szczawnica. For this reason, in 1320 he found himself in the hands of the counts, managing the Bańskoszczawnica mining chamber. In 1424, King Zygmunt Luxembourg offered him Queen Barbara. In 1447 Jan Jiskra had it in his hands. In 1490, Queen Beatrycze, wife of King Maciej Korwin, gave him a Dócze, who ruled him to extinct the family in 1647. Three years later a feudal "state", whose center was the castle, was bought by Kasper Lippay. In 1677, the castle was devastated by Kurwiec Emeryk Thököly. Underained, partly disappeared during the 18th century. Currently, only ruins can be seen.
The village of Šášovské Podhradie was probably founded in the castle in the 13th century - today part of the city of Żary over Hron.
