Michael's Gate, Bratislava

Michael's Gate is a historic landmark and museum nestled in the heart of Bratislava, Slovakia. This well-preserved medieval tower is the only city gate that has survived from the original fortifications that once encircled the city. Dating back to the 14th century, Michael's Gate stands as a testament to Bratislava's rich past and is an essential part of the city's Old Town charm.

The gate, named after the patron saint of the church that once stood nearby, has undergone various renovations throughout the centuries, most notably in the 18th century when it acquired its current baroque appearance. Atop the 51-meter-tall tower is a striking copper roof, a feature that adds to the gate's distinctive silhouette against Bratislava's skyline.

Today, Michael's Gate is home to the Museum of Arms, which showcases medieval fortifications and weaponry, providing visitors with a glimpse into the military history of the region. The museum's collection spans several floors, culminating in an observation deck that offers panoramic views of the city. From this vantage point, tourists can admire the maze of cobblestone streets of the Old Town, the modern cityscape, and the imposing Bratislava Castle perched on a nearby hill.

The gate's location also marks the beginning of the city's historic Coronation Route, which was traditionally used during the coronation processions of Hungarian kings, as Bratislava served as the Kingdom of Hungary's coronation city from the 16th to the 18th century.
