When Is the Best Time To Visit Slovakia?
The answer to the question of what is the best month to visit Slovakia depends on what you are interested in doing during your stay. Here you can see an overview of each month and its typical weather conditions.
Tourist Season in Slovakia
Slovakia is best visited during the summer months from June to August. Long and sunny days make it possible to visit cities and trek mountain trails. Although there may be fleeting rainfall and thunderstorms during this time, they are not frequent or intense.
The spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months are a bit cooler, but this is still a good time to visit. Nature in spring or autumn attracts hikers.
The winter months are cold and snowy. The weather makes sightseeing and hiking difficult; some mountain trails are closed during this time. In the higher parts of the mountains (including the Eastern Carpathians and Western Carpathians), the ski season runs from December to the end of March. On the other hand, spas, baths and thermal springs can be enjoyed year-round.

April - May

The spring months bring a gradual rise in temperatures, with the mercury bar rising to 10°C - 20°C. The south of the country including the Bratislava area is usually much warmer than the mountainous north. In the higher parts of the mountains there may still be snow in April, with temperatures hovering around 0°C - 5°C, and frosts may also occur at night. The days are getting longer and the sun is increasingly in the sky, so you can start the first walks on the trails. Nature awakening to life encourages active recreation.
Slovakia is famous for its numerous spas, treatment centers and spa & wellness centers. Such treatments in thermal springs can be indulged in at any time of the year and regardless of the prevailing weather.

June - August
Jun | Jul | Aug |
The warmest and sunniest time of the year. There are clear weather differences between the mountainous north and the low-lying south. High in the Tatras the average temperature is 10°C, sometimes even less. In the mid-mountain and highland areas it rises to 16°C - 20°C. The warmest is in the south (in the lowlands), where the bar of the mercury rises to 25°C and above. During this period, rain is also inevitable, occurring in the form of fleeting, not very intense downpours.
Summer is the ideal time to enjoy bathing and swimming pools, especially in southern Slovakia in the Danube Plain. High temperatures and scorching sunshine guarantee relaxation in this part of the country, including Dunajská Streda and Šturovo with plenty of attractions and well-developed tourist infrastructure. Other swimming areas in the south are already much smaller, although many of them, especially in small towns, can be much calmer.
In the mountains, the weather is much better in August than in July. The heat is gone and the number of storms is reduced, and all hiking trails are open. Lovers of mountain hiking and active pursuits can go to the Low and High Tatra regions, which are ideal for hiking. It is worth combining trips to the mountains with relaxation in modern swimming pool complexes in places such as Bešenová, Rajca or Wierzbowa (Vrbov).

September - October

The autumn weather continues to be quite warm and pleasant. Temperatures oscillate between 15°C - 20°C, with slightly cooler temperatures at night - around 10°C. The sun shines an average of 6-8 hours a day, cloudiness and fleeting rains may also occur.
Nature taking on colorful hues makes hiking more pleasant. September is a good time to climb mountain peaks - it is warm, and rains do not fall as often as in summer. When going to the mountains, you should take into account that some trails are open only from the second half or the end of June to the end of September. As in other seasons, you can enjoy bathing in thermal springs and pools without any difficulties.

November - March
Nov | Dec | Jan | Feb | Mar |
The winter months tend to be cold and snowy - especially in the highlands and mountainous areas, slightly warmer in the south of the country. In the higher parts of the mountains, the pillar of the mercury can drop below -10°C. From November, rainfall is replaced by snowfall.
From December to the end of March is the season for lovers of skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports. Slovakia has modern tourist infrastructure, abundant accommodation, well-prepared ski slopes and lifts. From early December until the May weekend, snow is guaranteed on the slopes of Chopok. Right at its foothills operates the largest ski station in Slovakia - Jasná Nízke Tatry with more than 30 slopes, some of which, in case of any shortage of natural snow, are supplemented by artificial snowmaking. In winter you can also enjoy year-round thermal baths with indoor pools (including Bešenova, Liptovský Jan, Oravice).
