Stol
Facts and practical information
Stol, the highest peak of the Karawanks mountain range, stands as a majestic sentinel on the border between Slovenia and Austria. At an elevation of 2,236 meters, this mountain is not only a prominent landmark but also a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The Karawanks form a natural barrier between the two countries, and Stol, also known in German as Hochstuhl, is a testament to the rugged beauty that characterizes this region.
The ascent to Stol is a journey through diverse landscapes, starting with lush forests that gradually give way to alpine meadows and, eventually, rocky terrain. The trail to the summit is well-marked, offering several routes with varying degrees of difficulty. The most popular starting point is from the town of Zirovnica, where hikers can follow the path that takes roughly 5 hours to reach the top. Along the way, the mountain huts provide rest and refreshment, allowing climbers to recharge and enjoy the local hospitality.
Once at the summit, adventurers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. On a clear day, the vista extends across the rolling hills and valleys of Slovenia, the peaks of the Julian Alps, and into Austria. The lookout is particularly famous for its stunning sunrise and sunset scenes, painting the sky in vibrant colors that reflect off the mountain's rocky facade.
Stol is not only a feast for the eyes but also a hub for biodiversity. The mountain and its surroundings are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. As part of the Natura 2000 network, the area is protected, ensuring the preservation of its unique ecosystems.
