Batognica, Triglav National Park
Facts and practical information
Batognica is a 2164 -meter high mountain above the Soča River near Krn. The summit itself was the scene of constant clashes between the Isonzo Front between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies.
The worst struggles were held at Batognica on July 21, 1915, when the Italians pushed the Austrians to the eastern third of the plateau. The Italians thus occupied the western and central part of the Batognica plateau and the Austrians the eastern part. The armies were only 85 meters away. Both armies were heavily consolidated, and they worked extensive cavern systems and other trenches in which soldiers then spent two years. The line had not moved anywhere during this time, so the Italians dug a tunnel under Austrian positions, into which they were installed. The Austrians, who wanted to surprise the Italians with the same intention, accidentally discovered the Italian tunnel, carefully picked up all the explosives and later threw Italian positions in the air.
Even today, large craters that were created at the explosion are visible at Batognica.
