Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town

Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) stands as a beacon of modern art on the African continent. This prestigious museum, tagged as a cultural powerhouse, is dedicated to showcasing 21st-century art from Africa and its Diaspora. Housed in a transformed grain silo complex that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, Zeitz MOCAA is a pinnacle of architectural innovation and artistic expression.

The museum, which opened its doors in September 2017, was named after its founding patron, Jochen Zeitz, a German businessman and art collector who is a former CEO of Puma. His substantial collection forms the backbone of the museum's exhibitions. The transformation of the 57-meter tall historic grain silo into a state-of-the-art museum was undertaken by the renowned London-based designer Thomas Heatherwick and his team, who ingeniously retained and repurposed elements of the original industrial structure.

Zeitz MOCAA spreads across nine floors with over 100 galleries, making it the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world. It offers a diverse range of exhibitions, including cutting-edge multimedia installations, photography, painting, and sculpture. The museum's central atrium, carved from the silo’s dense cellular structure of forty-two tubes, is a striking feature that provides an awe-inspiring entry point to the galleries.
