Complutum, Alcalá de Henares
Facts and practical information
Complutum was a settlement on the Iberian peninsula within Tarraconensis. In the 3rd century it appears related in the Antonine Itinerary A-24 and in the Antonine Itinerary A-25 headed with the title Alio itinere ab Emerita Cesaragustam 369 which means "Another road from Mérida to Zaragoza, 369 miles", between the squares of Titulciam and Arriaca.
The archaeological site of Complutum is a set of archaeological remains corresponding to Complutum, the ancient Roman city on which today sits Alcalá de Henares, in the Community of Madrid. It is located in the current Juncal street, in the south western end of the current city, more than a kilometre away from the medieval nucleus; while both the pre-Roman oppidum and Alcalá la Vieja andalusí occupied elevated points of easier defence in the hills on the other side of the Henares river.
Since 1988 it has been declared of cultural interest by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Community of Madrid.
Since August 6, 2008 an important part has been open to the public as an open-air museum integrated in the Network of visitable sites of the Community of Madrid.
