Nuestra Señora del Azogue, Puebla de Sanabria
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa María del Azogue is a Romanesque church, with Gothic-style alterations, located in the Zamora town of Puebla de Sanabria, Castile and León.
Located in the highest part of the town, next to the castle, it preserves the Romanesque walls of the nave and two doorways that are located in them, all of which date from the second half of the twelfth century.
The southern door is located under a porch between the tower and the south arm of the transept. It consists of three semicircular archivolts flared over jambs. The outer one is decorated with tetrapetal flowers, the middle one is a rounded arch surrounded by stems that intertwine to form rhombuses and the inner one is formed by a nacelle between two openings.
The other door, the western one, is formed by four pointed archivolts. The columns and statues attached to them deserve special mention, made of slate stone, while the rest is granite. A bearded knight's head is embedded in the keystone.
Under the atrium there is a Romanesque granite baptismal font with a truncated cone shape and decorated with an angel between two flordeliselled crosses, a man in front with a book in his hands and another in profile, hooded.
It is similar to other neighbouring churches in Galicia and northern Portugal.
