The German Cemetery of Cuacos de Yuste is a military cemetery located near the Monastery of Yuste, in the municipality of Cuacos de Yuste, province of Cáceres, Spain.
Many of the German soldiers, airmen and sailors of the First World War and Second World War who reached the Spanish coasts and lands due to shipwrecks or the shooting down of their planes are buried there.
The German government, through the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, decided to gather the bodies of the German soldiers scattered throughout Spain in a single place. The works began in 1980 and that same year the transfer of the bodies began, finishing the work in 1983, when it was officially inaugurated on June 1st, with the attendance of representatives of the German Embassy, Spanish authorities and relatives who came from Germany.
All the graves are the same and only have a cross in dark granite. The inscription contains the name of the soldier, his military rank, as well as his date of birth and death.
The 38 sailors who died in the sinking of the U-77 off the coast of Calpe, the five submariners belonging to the U-966, one crew member from the U-760, another from the U-454, one from the U-447, five from the U-755, one from the U-955 and one from the U-39 from the First World War, as well as numerous pilots and air force crew members stand out. There are also 8 tombstones with the inscription "Ein Unbekannter Deutscher Soldat", dedicated to the remains of 8 men whose identity is unknown.
At the cemetery there is a plaque that reads, translated from German:
