Bosque fósil de Verdeña, Montaña Palentina Natural Park
Facts and practical information
The carboniferous forest of Verdeña is a paleontological site of the "petrified forest" type located in the hamlet of Verdeña, in the province of Palencia. The age of the fossil remains is 305 Ma, and the site was formed from the destruction of a coastal forest due to a marine flooding. It was discovered after an opencast coal mining operation uncovered the sandstone level where the remains are found. There are impressions of roots and remains of fallen trunks with lengths that can exceed five metres, some of them belonging to the genus Sigillaria.
The site is proposed as a "Site of Spanish geological interest of international relevance" by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain for its paleontological interest, with the denomination "CC003: Carboniferous forest of Verdeña", within the geological context "The Carboniferous of the Cantabrian Zone".
