Acueducto Medieval de San Rafael, Petrer
Facts and practical information
The aqueduct of San Rafael located in the municipality of Petrel Spain is a hydraulic infrastructure of Valencian Gothic style made between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
This aqueduct is located on the Rambla dels Molins that flows into the Vinalopó river. Adjacent to the aqueduct on the north side is the neighbourhood of San Rafael, whose main street called de los Canteros is clearly aligned with the irrigation channel for the water conduction, so in a way the aqueduct acted as a generator of this neighbourhood.
The time of construction of the aqueduct is unknown, but it can be framed between the XIV-XVI centuries.
It is a hydraulic construction of which nowadays only three of the six arches that formed it are preserved, keeping four pillars of truncated conical base of ashlar masonry of regular size. The pointed masonry arches start from a projection, like a moulding. At the upper part there is a U-shaped canalization made of ceramic pieces. The central part of the aqueduct is preserved.
Remains of the canalization can be seen on the north bank, and on the south side there is the start of a machon.
