Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, Toledo

Nestled in the historic city of Toledo, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes stands as a remarkable testament to Spain's rich religious and architectural heritage. Founded by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Toro, this 15th-century Franciscan monastery is a jewel of Gothic style with an infusion of Spanish-Flemish features.

The monastery is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the Catholic Monarchs' power during the period of the Reconquista. Its construction began in 1477 and was intended to become the final resting place for the royal couple, although these plans changed after the conquest of Granada, which led to the decision to be buried in the Royal Chapel of Granada instead.

The church's façade is adorned with the chains of Christian prisoners freed after the Battle of Granada, a poignant reminder of the era's turbulent history. Inside, the main chapel captivates visitors with its breathtaking vaulted ceilings and the ornate altar. The cloister, with its double-level arcade, is equally impressive, featuring a lush garden and intricately carved pillars that tell stories of saints and monarchs.
