Puerto de la Estaca
Facts and practical information
The Port of La Estaca is the main port of the island of El Hierro, Spain. It is the gateway to the island by sea, being the only port of the island where passenger ships dock. It is located in the municipality of Valverde. Despite functioning as a passenger port, it was initially a fishing shelter of small dimensions. Next to the port is the Varadero Beach.
Unlike the other islands, the capital of El Hierro, Valverde, is not at sea level, so the port of La Estaca is a coastal neighborhood that is more than 7 kilometers from the municipal center. Around the port a small population nucleus was generated, which in 1991 had 140 inhabitants and in 2007 had 125 inhabitants.
Its password is that of the maritime province of Tenerife to which it belongs.
Since March 2014, the catamaran ferry Alborán arrives at Puerto de la Estaca, which operates the line "Los Cristianos - Puerto de la Estaca". This fast vessel is operated by the company Naviera Armas. It was built in Tasmania, Australia, in 1999, by Incat. Since 2001 it is owned by Acciona Trasmediterranea, and in 2014 it is chartered by Naviera Armas. It has capacity for almost 900 people. Its port of registry was Algeciras, but since 2014 it is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
