Torre de Vallferosa
Facts and practical information
The tower of Vallferosa is a watchtower located in the municipality of Torá, in the region of La Segarra.
It was built around 970 AD following the military strategy of building watchtowers at key points conquered from the Saracens. The aim was to build a line of fortifications visually connected to each other. Around 1000 AD another circular tower was built surrounding the old one with ramparts to reinforce it. At the top you can still see the battlements.
It is 33 m high and is considered to be one of the finest examples of 10th century European military architecture and has survived unchanged since its construction.
The access door is located 10 m above the ground.
