Iglesia parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora
Facts and practical information
The Parish Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is located in the center of Ayora, forming an almost complete block. It is a compendium of architecture between the 16th and 17th centuries, in Renaissance and Mannerist style. It currently houses the parish archive and a museum of sacred art.
It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on 21 May 1981. Identifier of the property granted by the Ministry of Culture: RI-51-0004496
Most of the building was built between 1508 and 1739, and is a compendium of Valencian architecture during the years it was under construction. The nave of the church, covered by the now hidden ribbed vault, is of Gothic tradition but with Renaissance influence in the moulding of the profiles and arches. The main doorway is a beautiful example of blacksmithing, rare in Valencian architecture. The bell tower has a curious dome made in the Roman style and the communion chapel is an excellent example of Baroque architecture, with its falsely moved floor plan and elliptical dome, following schemes that try to go beyond the regional scope.
Apart from the interesting tiles that are preserved both on the pavement of the communion chapel, as in the sacristy probably from the old choir located in the center of the church, and despite the losses.
