Monumento a Jovellanos, Oviedo
Facts and practical information
The Jovellanos Monument is a tribute located in the city of Oviedo, Principality of Asturias, Spain, dedicated in 1798 by the Junta General del Principado de Asturias to the enlightened Spaniard Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, a native of that region, born in Gijón in 1744, in recognition of his dedication and work towards the progress and industrialization of Asturias.
The traces of the monument were sent from Madrid to the Junta General by the architect Juan de Villanueva. It was the first public monument dedicated to a private individual in Spain. It has been moved and mutilated up to three times, being able to contemplate the current state of the monument in a side corner of the monastery of San Pelayo de Oviedo, in the current street of Jovellanos in that city.
