Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Manzanares
Facts and practical information
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is an architectural building, predominantly in the Castilian Renaissance style, located in the Spanish town of Manzanares, in the Province of Ciudad Real.
In terms of size, it is the largest church in the Diocese of Ciudad Real. Although a document from 1352 mentions a church dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia as completed, the current parish did not begin to be built until at least the second half of the 15th century and continued to expand throughout the following century. The building is strategically located in the Plaza de la Constitución of the municipality and, together with other emblematic municipal buildings, forms a complex of great architectural value.
The "masterpiece" of the church is undoubtedly its sculptural portico, one of the most important works of stereotomy built in Spain, whose design is attributed to the Basque stonemason Alonso Galdón. The importance of this monumental ensemble earned the whole building the status of a Site of Cultural Interest, declared on October 8, 1991.
