Sant Joan Baptista
Facts and practical information
San Juan Bautista de Aguiró is in the municipality of La Torre de Cabdella in the region of Pallars Jussá, in the village of Aguiró.
The church of Sant Joan d'Idir is apparently documented since 986, but they are false documents that actually belong to the end of the 11th century.
The present church, which has been transformed from the original Romanesque one, has a single nave with a small square bell tower in the north-east corner. The present church has been changed: the entrance is to the east, where the apse should have been, and the altar, to the west, in the place that should have been the foot of the nave. A sacristy was added at the back.
The vault of the nave has a semicircular arch, reinforced with three toral arches. All this gives the impression of being a work of the 17th century. However, the strange sacristy at the foot of the nave, you can discover the remaining Romanesque work of the many reforms it has undergone: it is the base of a square bell tower, with work from the second half of the eleventh century. It is still possible to see the lesenes that framed each side, as well as the windows, which have been walled up. The location of the nave must have been next to where the village cemetery is.
