Facts and practical information
The ichnite sites of Asturias comprise the councils of Gijón, Villaviciosa, Colunga and Ribadesella in that Spanish autonomous community. These are footprints and remains belonging to the Jurassic, of which nine sites are worth mentioning, where 446 footprints have been found. The ichnites from the beach of La Griega belonging to a large sauropod whose footprint reaches 130 cm in diameter are the largest found so far in Spain and are among the largest in the world.
These sites can be visited along the so-called dinosaur coast: the beach of Merón, the cliffs of Oles and the lighthouse and port of Tazones. the cliffs of Lastres and the beach of La Griega. the beach of Vega, the cliffs of Tereñes and the beach of Santa Marina.
By Decree 45/2001, of 19 April, the ichnite deposits of Asturias were declared a natural monument, and by Decree 170/2014, of 29 December, the Special Area of Conservation Yacimientos de icnitas was declared, within the Natura 2000 network.
