Palacio de los Marqueses Cuevas de Velasco, Espinosa de los Monteros
Facts and practical information
The Palace of the Cuevas Velasco is located in the town of Espinosa de los Monteros, province of Burgos, community of Castilla y León.
The construction of the palace, attributed to Juan Gómez de Mora, dates back to 1623, on the initiative of Don Pedro de Velasco y Bracamonte, major steward of King Philip IV, to whom the king entrusted the education and custody of his illegitimate son Don Juan José of Austria, whom Don Pedro served as a tutor, and who would reside in this palace for some years of his life.
The name of the palace is taken from the title of Marquis de las Cuevas de Velasco, which the son of Don Pedro de Velasco received. The Marquises of Las Cuevas de Velasco belong to a second line of the House of Velasco, through the Lords of La Revilla, descendants of an uncle of the first Count of Haro.
With a marked Renaissance style, the building is composed of a house and an annexed chapel.
The construction alternates between masonry and ashlar walls, with very well worked architectural elements, especially highlighting the main facade that is inside the enclosure, and the front of the chapel dedicated to the apostle Santiago, whose figure in pilgrim's costume appears in a central niche.
The decoration has a clear Escorial influence.
