Ermita del Humilladero
Facts and practical information
The Ermita del Humilladero is a hermitage located in the municipality of Guadalupe, province of Cáceres. It is situated on the hill of the Altamiras, about 4 kilometres from the village and is an excellent viewpoint.
The hermitage of Humilladero, whose real name is Santa Cruz, was begun at the end of the 15th century so that pilgrims could pray when they saw the shrine of Guadalupe. Miguel de Cervantes brought here his chains from captivity in Algiers, as an offering to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
It is built in flattened brick and has a ribbed vault. Its Mudejar "brick Gothic" style can be seen in its windows with tracery and rosettes. In its construction the same rules were used as in the temple of the Mudejar cloister of the monastery of Guadalupe. It was declared a National Monument in 1931 and of Cultural Interest.
