Església de Sant Martí, Lleida

The Church of Saint Martin is a Romanesque-style Catholic temple located in the old town of the Catalan city of Lleida. The temple has a single nave covered with a pointed vault, smooth and reinforced by three arches in the nave and one double apse.

It was built in the 12th century and was the parish church of the Estudi General de Lleida. During the Reapers' War it was converted into a military barracks and from the 19th century it was used as a municipal prison.

In 1893, the bishop Josep Meseguer ordered the restoration of the temple. For this purpose, the doorway of the parish of El Tormillo was used, which at that time was part of the Diocese of Lérida. Meseguer acquired the work in exchange for 375 pesetas, and it is currently claimed by the town council of the town of Huesca.

Once restored, the church recovered its liturgical use until the 1970s, when a new church of San Martín was inaugurated on an adjacent plot of land. Since then it has been used to conserve part of the bishopric's collection of sacred art.

In 1997 the consortium of the Diocesan Museum of Lérida was constituted and it was decided that the Church of San Martín would be used as provisional headquarters until the inauguration of the new museum, which took place in November 2007.

In 2011 an agreement was signed between the City Council of Lleida, the university and the Diocesan Museum to recover the academic and liturgical uses of the church as well as for the creation of an interpretation centre of the Estudi General.
