Parc Natural del Montseny, Montseny Massif
Facts and practical information
Montseny Natural Park is a Spanish protected natural area located in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia. It is part of the 12 natural areas managed by the Diputació de Barcelona and protects an area of the Catalan pre-coastal mountain range, of which the Montseny massif is the highest. It includes territories of the counties of Osona, Vallés Oriental and La Selva. It is remarkable for its pronounced reliefs and its rich ecological variety. For this reason, in 1978 Unesco declared it a biosphere reserve. It is currently managed by the Diputació de Barcelona and the Diputació de Girona.
This natural park is the oldest in Catalonia and is also one of the most important, since in a relatively small area there are plant communities typical of the three great European biomes: the Mediterranean, the Eurosiberian and the boreoalpine. It is worth mentioning that the natural fir forest of Montseny is the southernmost in Europe. For these characteristics, in 1978 UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve.
