Castell de Vilafamés, Vilafamés
Facts and practical information
The castle of Villafamés, is located at the top of the village. The foundations of the same as well as various documents, which refer to "Beni-Hamez", indicate its Arab origin.
Conquered by Jaime I in 1233, it has undergone various reforms throughout its history, with its oldest remains dating back to the 14th century, when the Master of the Order of Montesa obliged the inhabitants of Villafamés to repair and reinforce the fortifications of the place.
It suffered important attacks during the Carlist wars in the 19th century, when the fortification system was adapted to the new techniques of the war. A good example of this is the central tower with a circular floor plan that belongs to this period.
The castle has practically complete walls, and palatial outbuildings in front of the keep with a circular floor plan, with balconies that were once embrasured, and which has now been transformed by an intervention in the 19th century in which loopholes were added.
In front of the tower there is a rectangular space like a courtyard in which a cistern is preserved, which is possibly the only vestige of the Muslim period.
