Facts and practical information
Montsonís Castle is located in the town of Montsonís, in the municipality of Foradada, province of Lérida, Spain. Together with the rest of the fortresses built in the area, it defended the border between the 'Old Catalonia' and the 'New' for 125 years, until the definitive conquest of Lérida in 1149.
It is an inhabited castle, which is why the flag still flies on the keep and some of the rooms are for private use. In fact, it was the first private castle in Spain to be opened to the public.
