Castell del Far
Facts and practical information
The castle of El Far, also known as the Old Castle of Llinars, was a castle that was built in the vicinity of the Iberian settlement of El Far. Although it is not documented until the 10th century, it has been possible to identify constructions from the 6th century, the period in which the moat dug into the rock and some silos were built.
The Castilians of the castle of Far or Old Castle were vassals of the counts of Barcelona.
On his way to Girona, during the campaign against Catalonia in 982, Almanzor conquered the castle of Munt Fariq, which has been identified with the castle of Far. On his return he conquered Wutina, the present-day Ódena. This is the first documentary reference to the castle.
In 990 Gombau de Besora is listed as the lord of the castle.
During the 12th century the castle belonged to the Desfar lineage. There are documents that link it to Pedro de Far in 1135 and to Bernardo de Far in 1178. In this period a tower was built on the northeast side and the chapel was enlarged with a semicircular apse.
From 1200 onwards it could have been occupied by the Cathars who would have replaced the chapel with an open building suitable for their rites. The presence of a cross of Tolosa de Llenguadoc on one of the walls reinforces this theory. At the end of the 13th century it was the fief of Ramon de Cabrera by assignment of Peter III of Aragon to protect the north of Barcelona from the attacks of Philip III of France in 1285.
At the beginning of the 13th century it passed to the Corbera family, the widow of Sibila, wife of Ramon de Corbera, ordered the construction of a new chapel and her son Riambau I de Corbera offered it to the bishop of Barcelona in 1336. It was enlarged with the construction of a new tower on the north side and residential spaces with Gothic windows and stone corbels. It was a century of tensions between the Castilians and King Peter IV of Aragon.
On May 24, 1448 the castle collapsed due to an earthquake. A few years later the Corbera-Santcliment built the New Castle of Llinars, currently within the town of Llinars del Vallés.
