Facts and practical information

The castle of Aulencia is located in the municipality of Villanueva de la Cañada, in the Community of Madrid. Next to its enclave arose the disappeared village of Villafranca del Castillo, which currently gives its name to a luxury development. Hence it is also known as the castle of Villafranca.

It stands on the Horcajo hill, located near the confluence of the rivers Aulencia, the stream from which it takes its name, and Guadarrama. This place is one of the most ecologically valuable areas of the Regional Park of the middle course of the Guadarrama River and its surroundings, a protected natural area created in 1999.

The building is in a state of progressive ruin, although much of the original structure is preserved. It is privately owned. Nearby is the European Space Astronomy Centre of the European Space Agency.
