Castell de Sant Iscle
Facts and practical information
Vidreras Castle or San Acisclo Castle is a castle located in the Girona town of Vidreras, in La Selva. Nowadays the castle is abandoned, and apart from clearing the vegetation, no consolidation or excavation work has been carried out. It can be reached by following the path that leads to the Llobet Tower and the marshes.
In 2004, Vidreres Town Council undertook a global archaeological intervention project in the castle enclosure. Since then, several excavation campaigns have been carried out, which have made it possible to document the different areas of the castle.
The remains of the castle are shown in a strong quadrangular plan of about 30 meters per side. Two construction phases can be detected: the first phase from the 12th and 13th century includes the southeast tower 15 meters high and three floors, attached walls, cistern and chapel dedicated to San Acisclo and Santa Victoria, of which remains of the walls and the semicircular apse. The second phase dates back to the 14th century and includes the rest of the towers, the ataludados walls and the old wall coverings. The moat is still preserved around the castle.
